MYCELIUM
A nourishing community
(2021)
She went and went and went, and there stood a hut on chicken legs. She said, « Hut, hut, turn your eyes to the forest, your gate to me, so that I may go in and out. » The hut turned its eyes to the forest and its gate to her. She went in, and there sat Baba Yaga, her breasts hanging over a pole, stoking the coals with her nose and sweeping the stove with her tongue. Baba Yaga asked, « Did you come of your own free will or not? »
* Based on various oral traditions of the stories of Baba Yaga, an ambivalent mother and witch figure from Russian folk tales.
MYCELIUM is (after MASA MATER) the second part of an artistic exploration of the maternal body.
Drawing on societal, microbiological, folktale, and dream-based body images, we embark on a search for the maternal body. The boundaries between organisms blur – we exchange information between yeast bacteria and skin cells, between eardrum and optic nerve. We grow, we expand, we divide into a thousand pieces. Where does my body begin? And am I actually here voluntarily?
MYCELIUM has been invited to numerous international festivals and was nominated for the Greenhorn Prize at the Figura Festival in 2024. In 2025, Mycelium won the Jury Award at the Spectaculo Interessen Festival 2025 in Ostrava for “Authenticity, diversity, expressiveness of the body, and a strong performative presence”.
