Now
A WOMAN IN THE SUN
A WOMAN IN THE SUN is a production of the Brazilian theater company Projeto Trajetórias.
A Woman in the Sun” focuses on the life and work of Maura Lopes Cançado, a Brazilian writer who spent long periods in psychiatric hospitals. In two of her books, Cançado recounts her experiences of living there in isolation.

The play establishes a parallel between the confinement experienced by the writer and the confinement that we all experienced in times of pandemic Covid-19. The staging and dramaturgical organization are signed by Ivan Sugahara and the cast is formed by the actresses Danielle Oliveira and Maria Augusta Montera.
The dramaturgy is constructed with fragments of Cançado’s first book, “The Asylum is God” (1965). In it, the author recounts one of her admissions to the National Center for Psychiatry, located in Engenho de Dentro (Rio de Janeiro). The story begins with her self-hospitalization in October 1959 and continues until her release in March 1960.

Danielle Oliveira has been studying the subject of mental health for five years now. In 2017, she conceived the scenic experience “Lugar de Cabeça Lugar de Corpo” (Place of Head Place of Body) based on real testimonies of people who lived the experience of the psychiatric hospital, such as Stela do Patrocínio, Bispo do Rosário, Lima Barreto and Maura Lopes Cançado. The project was carried out until 2019 at Espaço Travessia, an art and culture center located in the hospital where Cançado was hospitalized – now the Nise da Silveira Municipal Institute – and presented to patients, employees of the mental health system and also to visitors.
