MARVIN M’TOUMO

Marvin M’toumo is an artist whose unique poetry transcends traditional academic boundaries between art, theater, literature, and fashion. They express their sensitivity through a fluid, unconfined practice that places identities, stereotypes, and archetypes at the heart of a critical poetics filled with symbols, humor, and dramaturgy.

Description

Graduating from the École Nationale Supérieure de la Villa Arson in Nice in 2016, Marvin created various poetic performances, films, and living tableaux there. Marvin also works on writing several literary texts. In 2017, Marvin joined the Fashion and Accessory Design department at the Geneva University of Art and Design (HEAD), from which they graduated in 2019. Marvin designed costumes and performed at the Théâtre de l’Usine for the play So Long Lives This, and This Gives Life to Thee by Kayije Kagame (2019).

In February 2023, Marvin designed the costumes for the choreographer Guillaume Hulot’s piece MILK at the Hanover Opera House in Germany and created a haute couture fan collection with Lognon, part of the Chanel house, and the fan maker Duvelleroy. Marvin was a finalist at the International Fashion and Photography Festival in Hyères at Villa Noailles, where their collection « Chien Fleur » won the prestigious Chloé Prize (2020).

In 2021, Marvin collaborated with the Jean Paul Gaultier house on designing a capsule collection called « Les Marins. »

In 2022, Marvin wrote, directed, scenographed, performed, and designed costumes for their first piece at the Théâtre de l’Usine in Geneva, titled Concours de larmes. This runway-show performance reached a wider audience during its presentation at 3537 – Dover Street Market in Paris (March 2023) and during its Swiss tour at Théâtre de l’Arsenic in Lausanne and Théâtre du Grütli in Geneva (May 2023). They collaborated with the publishing house Clinamen (Les Presses du réel) and photographer Pauline Scotto Di Cesare to produce a photography publication featuring the various characters and texts from this staging (2022/2023). In 2022, Marvin won the Premio Award for performing arts encouragement. Currently, Marvin is working on their piece Rectum Crocodile, created at Pavillon ADC in Geneva.
